Oh, and the pub went well, my skateboard was part of the "best overall" group. There was no 'real' first prize and such. And the sculptures weren't even at the pub to be judged... *mumble....gotmyhopesup...*
But the pub was fun, I'm gonna try some fancier drinks in the future!

Ninja Pub!

Hey bloggers!

The next Ninja Pub is approx the 19th of this month.

And my skateboard and sculpture are being voted on (with everyone else's of course) at the pub.

What is a Ninja Pub you ask?

A Ninja Pub is hosted once every month/2 months on Seneca@York campus, at the Hive, our campus bar. DMA students and faculty get to hang out with each other, and sometimes there's a presentation.

So wish me luck with the competition, I hear there's a pretty good prize for fav sculpture and fav skateboard.

I know my skateboard wasn't the best of all of them, so I'm putting all my money on Rugi! (He is my sculpture I've been posting on the blog here if you forgot, or haven't been on my site for too long).

Flash Research Assignment

I hope you enjoy my research on Flash Symbols.
(Sorry to bore you bloggers out there, or maybe this might be helpful. In that case, you're very welcome :) )

There are 4 different types of symbols in Flash are:
Movie Clips
Buttons
Graphics
and
Text/Font

Movie Clips
To convert an object into a movie clip symbol, you must first highlight the object. Then you can do three things, right click and click Convert to Symbol, click Modify and then Convert to Symbol, or use the shortcut F8.

They are reusable pieces of flash animation that consist of one or more graphics and or button symbols. So they are flash movies in a flash project. They have their own non-restricted timeline (they can have as many frames and layers as they'd like, just like the actual project you're working on) that plays independent of the main movie's timeline. The benefit to using movieclips is that you can control them from actionscript (the program language in Flash), you can change their dimensions, position, color, alpha, and other properties, you can also duplicate and delete the clips.

Buttons
To convert an object into a button symbol, you must first highlight the object. Then you can do three things, right click and click Convert to Symbol, click Modify and then Convert to Symbol, or use the shortcut F8.

These are used for timeline navigation.They add interactivity to the movie and respond to mouse clicks, key press, rollovers and or rollout, and other actions. You choose which graphics will respond depending on button information (Up, Over, Down, and Hit), and then assign actions to the instance of a button. They have 4 frames in their timeline: one each for the up, over and down function, and one to define the hit area of the button.

Graphics
To convert an object into a graphics symbol, you must first highlight the object. Then you can do three things, right click and click Convert to Symbol, click Modify and then Convert to Symbol, or use the shortcut F8.

They are reusable images that are used mainly to create animations. Any drawn vector, plain text, imported bitmap image, or a combination can be converted into a single controllable object: as a graphic symbol. They are only one frame long.

Text/Font
To create text, simply click and drag where you're working using the text tool. Then click inside the text box to create the text you would like to display in your Flash.

You can have either Static, Input, or Dynamic text. Static text is used for titles, labels, or anything else that will appear in your movie. Input text options are used for user input, like obtaining a username or other information in Flash. The third type of text is a Dynamic text. They're used to display text that changes dynamically when the flash runs.

Hey bloggers!

I just handed in my assignment today! I'm officially done school!
And I'm kinda sad...This semester was super cool. SUPER STRESSFUL! But awesome!

So I have NO idea how many hours I put into Rugi, but enough for me to be proud of my second sculpy model attempt. Believe me, it's ALOT better than my first one, it shall never see the light of day. Ever.

Here's some shots of Rugi with objects, holding the sword and sheath, and him in his nice little box.

Well, I guess that's all...I'll post some more stuff from second semester on here, and send a link to my own site that I shall be getting next semester.

Final Skateboard Time!

Hello again bloggers!

Just wanted to post the pictures of my skateboard, all finished and stuff :)

I got the illustrator file sent to a guy who lives in downtown Toronto and he printed it on a giant sticker basically. Not shiny, but matte finish, which I liked a lot more. And I also bought a blank board for a cheap price :)

So, for a grand total of $40...Here it is!

You can see that there is a bit of white on the left side. Story is, that the guy at the print shop printed it too small so the template is clearly visible, so I went for sacrificing the left side of the skateboard with some white. I'm happy overall, I mean, how many people get their art made into a skateboard?

I'll post the finished and glossed Rugi as well soon, so look forward to that.

Sculpture Update Pt. 4

Hello again fellow bloggers!

I'm almost done my sculpture! I just have to glue everything together and put Rugi in his box so I can hand it in on Friday.

So I'll start with this picture:

I've spray painted the entire sculpture white with some automotive paint. This way, the colours will pop out more.
And as you can see I've already started painting, I'm being messy now because I can do detailing later. Right now I just want to get the base colours down. Here I've got the beige bandage and the light blue belt part of Rugi's outfit started.

Now I've got the navy blue paint done for the pants and Rugi's shoulder cloth.

And here's the ponytail that broke :(
I've come up with a fix for that, don't worry!

Here's the(almost) final product of Rugi, minus the ponytail.

And a back shot :)

Here's a shot of the sword and sheath as well. I LOVE this sword!
And the tassle that's on Rugi's sword, I'm using embroidery thread and beads from the dollar store :)

Here's a shot of the back of the sculpture as well, with the new design that I added to the pants.

I used a stencil for the design that I made with a piece of a sketchbook page.
I decided the front of the pants were very detailed with the folds, and the back was plain, so I added this design to make the back interesting too.

Sculpture Update Pt. 3

Hello everyone!

Looks like my internet will give me the opportunity to upload some more pictures of my sculpture Rugi.
Next here is a picture of the entire body done.(Except for the hands, I made those later.)

I was getting REALLY excited at this point, my sculpture was looking SO cool!

It's cooked! :D Here you can see the hands and the extra draping bandages that I added before cooking.

Also, the paint on the base that I had for my sculpture started bubbling when I cooked Rugi. I was a little worried, but when it cooled down, it had a really nice texture to it. I love it when good accidents happen!

Here is a shot to show everyone how I'm attaching the head to the body. I just have a hole in the bottom of Rugi's head and a wire sticking out of his body. So once I'm done painting, I'll glue his head to his body.

Here's what the sword looks, and how big it is compared to Rugi's body.

Oh, and speaking of swords, here's the first one compared to the final one...

I still have to sand down my final sword of course. BUT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T READ LABELS AND DON'T CHECK EVERY FEW MINUTES WHEN COOKING SCULPY!!!

I have a new oven at my house, so the Celsius and Fahrenheit are switched. So I put the sculpy in at 130 Fahrenheit not 130 Celsius. So it didn't cook after 15 min, I was a little confused. Then I realized my mistake and changed the temperature. But then it took 3 minutes to cook since the sculpy is so thin. But I checked it 10 min after putting it in!!!! It was so black and warped and bubbled that I couldn't salvage it...

So here's a shot of the sheath versus the sword, I need to sand it down a bit too.

And here's a shot of Rugi with the ponytail on the head (which I just recently broke D: )

And I'll also add a closeup of one of Rugi's hands, just to give you an idea of what they look like and how they kinda hold onto the sword and sheath.

Well, that's all for today. I have started painting Rugi, but I'll add those pictures once I get a bit farther, don't want to spoil ALL the fun!

Sculpture Update Pt. 2

Hello again bloggers!

Well, I've gotten my sculpture A LOT farther than the last post, I'm actually painting it already!

But no worries, I shall show you every step I took to make it.
The last picture I showed was the head uncooked. So the next part was putting sculpy on the body of Rugi.

So I started placing sculpy around for the arms, legs, and torso, and put in the feet. (I knew only the toes would be showing in the final piece, so I wasn't too worried about the rest of the foot.)

Then, as you can see here, I made the pants. They are actually called Hakama pants in Japan, and were traditionally worn by samurai to protect their legs from brush when riding their horses.
You can also see the ribbon sculpy that I made (thanks to my Sketching teacher's clay extractor) that I will be using for Rugi's bandages.

Here's the front and back shots of Rugi's torso bandages. You can also see that I've make the belt for his sash. I made the ties seperate so that I can paint them and glue them on later.

I'll post the rest of the pictures later. The rest of the pictures are the finished arms and then cooking and painting.

Sculpture Update Pt.1

Hello everyone!

Just uploading some photos of my progress on the sculpture!

Here is the final piece I'd like to make:

I've named him Rugi, short for tsurugi. Tsurugi means sword, all the characters I'm designing are going to be named after an object or associating word with them.

So here is the start of it!

This is the start of it, I've got the legs and torso attached to a base. The base is just a decorative piece of wood painted black.

Next!

I attached the head to the torso, I later on take a different approach to the head.

Next!

I started putting aluminum foil on the joints to solidify it abit. And Nina the cat was nice enough to model as well :)

Next are some shots of me building tinfoil on the wireframe:

Later on I cut the round part off of the head and I'm going to attach it later.
For the head I made a ball of aluminum foil and put it in the middle of the wire ring.

And here is the start of the head, I'm going to put the ponytail on later.

Skateboards and Snowboards

Hey fellow bloggers!

So I have a new project along with my sculpture one. But this project is for two of my classes, New Media Tools, taught by the DMA coordinator Joseph Bodick (who by the way was nice enough to give us the templates for the boards!), and Sketching.

So our objective was to design some skateboards and snowboards. I did some research online for ideas, and talked to friends as well, and I'll be posting my favorite designs here.

Geisha and HIT (on) ME Design

-The Geisha design is one of my favorites! If you can see my notes on the sides there, I want to make the yellow a lot lighter, almost make it an off white yellow.

-The HIT (on) ME design was a shirt that I had printed and sold after I won a contest with my hometown skateboarding shop. So I decided to give it a more modern look. I might give it a black background if I come by it later when I have time.

Geisha Concepts

-These are designs that others suggested, my boyfriend is a big fan of black and white contrast, so I tried it out. And others suggested black and white contrast with one main focus colour, so I chose red.

And How Are We Feeling Today? Design

-This design was a suggestion of a friend to make a design that people could relate to somehow. And that they could look at to see all of the elements put into it to make one design. So I did a classic emotions collection. I did it in multiple colours to appeal to everyone's colour taste buds.

Flaky and Snow-words Design

-The first design was just a classic snowflakes idea. The colours were picked off the top of my head. The bottom flake is my favorite one.

-The second design was one I actually designed for my orientation drawing test to get into Digital Media Arts. I've cleaned up the idea and gone for a strong blue. Now the problem is I wasn't sure of a colour for the flakes, I've got some ideas in the notes. And I was wondering, do I go for a gradient, do I put black outlines, or maybe even another colour for outlines? So many questions...

Last, but not least!

Cherri Bomb Design

-This design was made for the fake studio I made up for the sculpture/toy and skateboard design. I like play on words with design. My reference for the cherry is from a logo of Cott Black Cherry Soda

Updates

Just a quick update on what's been happening for the past few weeks.

I went to a Studio Tour downtown with Seneca, and it was a blast! I saw alot of different places that I'd love to work at.

Now in Sketching class.

We're now working on our toy sculptures. I don't have any pictures uploaded yet, but soon! I'll upload the final piece (what I want it to look like) and some progress shots.

Soya Sauce - The Cheap Stuff

Hey fellow bloggers! Friday for Sketching class we made a japanese restaurant menu.

But before we could start painting we had to brainstorm as a group. We had a bit of info on the Restaurant, such as that it was called "Gi:Japanese Fusion restaurant".
And all they needed was a main logo, and art for the appetizers, main course meals, and the beer and wine. :)

So we started searching for what a Gi was. A Gi is any piece of clothing that you would wear in japan. But most North Americans know Gis as the outfits you wear when you participate in karate.

After that we looked at some yummy foods and drinks. And I chose to use dumplings as the appetizer picture, some sushi as the main dish, and a bottle of sake (an alcoholic drink in japan made of fermented rice) with a cup beside it. And for the main menu, a geisha, just to be traditional.

After the brainstorming was done, our teacher, Mr. Tedford, gave us our medium to paint with

Dollar Store Soya Sauce!

Yeah, it caught me off guard too!
So anyways, we started painting, dealing with the odd smell of the soya sauce, praying that my watercolour brushes would survive.

I'm not totally happy with this, I wish I could redo the geisha if anything...

Super Morlock Adventure Quest!

Hey Everyone! Last Friday was a blast! The PhotograFISTS went to downtown Toronto to get some shots, and it was so much fun!

After sifting through all 360+ photos, I managed to choose the ones I liked the most.

Poster Assignment

First out of class project for Sketching class. Week 3 Due date.

We were given the guidelines to make three abstract watercolour blobs.
One Warm colours,
One Cool colours,
And One Mix colours.

This is a REALLY fun project, I was working on this for 4 hours. Not because I couldn't figure out what to do, or because I'm slow at painting.
I just REALLY loved this project!
I kept changing faces, and position and sizes of the watercolour backgrounds.
That's why I have 2 warm colour posters, because I couldn't decide which one to do.

So this first one is the first warm poster:

This was the first warm coloured one that I did, but after finishing the cool and mix ones, I didn't like this one as much...It makes me think of Breakfast At Tiffany's...

Second poster I finished was the cool colour poster:

This one is my favorite, design wise and because blue and green are my FAVORITE colours!

And the last poster was the mix of warm and cool colours:

I really enjoyed this one, VERY colourful :) It makes me think of robots, a sexy robot!

This is the warm poster that I redid since I didn't like the last one, and I still don't like it...I'll try again if I have time, I'll find something interesting...

Watercolour Practice

This was Sketching class, week 2.

We were just to practice with some watercolours to get used to them again. I had recently used watercolour for a gift for my great grandmother, so I was more than happy to use my watercolours again. We had three objects to paint in roughly 5-10 minutes.

This first was a paintball helmet. Our teacher likes to play paintball, and I have to say, the helmets look really badass.
I like the glass of the helmet, and the overall look of it. I'm not too pleased with the details. If only I could've used pencil crayons on it when it dried. And If I had more time...

Second was a Sentinel from The Matrix series. This one is my favorite of the three paintings. I focused more on the head so I could give it some character. Not too happy with the arms though. (There were a MILLION of them) So I decided to go for a faint, abstract approach to the legs.

And last but not least was an alien...thing. I heard someone mention that it's from Starship Troopers? It was cool looking nevertheless. I liked using all the green/yellow/and black for this painting.

Bunny Assignment

This is a bunny that I had to draw the first day of Sketching For Communications Class. (I'm going to call it Sketching for short from now on)

This is the original that I did in 10 min with just a pencil.

And this is the cleaned up one that I did, just to brush up on my Photoshop skills. Just a pen and a brush tool, nothing too fancy.
